Drunken Text Foreshadows Fatal Crash

According to the news, a woman was in the middle of a nasty breakup. Apparently, the way she coped was to get drunk, hop in her car, and send texts to her ex while driving. Unfortunately, these decisions resulted in the death of her passenger, who was thrown from the car when they ran a red light and crashed into a truck. Three minutes before the accident, the young woman texted the following to her ex: “Driving drunk woo,” and “I'll be dead thanks to you.” This harbinger of doom foretold her friend's death, not her own. Instead of being killed in an accident, the young woman instead was charged with Manslaughter.

What is Manslaughter in Colorado?

A person will be charged with Manslaughter in Lakewood, Arvada or Westminster if they recklessly cause the death of another person. Obviously, driving while intoxicated is a reckless choice, but many people don't realize just how intoxicated they really are when they get behind the wheel. It sounds like this woman was experiencing a difficult, emotional breakup. One small bad choice (drinking away her sorrow) led to another bad choice (getting behind the wheel), and another (texting while driving). Ultimately, she crashed her car, and her passenger was thrown from the car. One bad decision often snowballs until you are facing serious criminal charges.
